Clubhouse 101: Etiquette, Tips & Tricks
As someone who’s worked in the social media industry for a couple years now, I can tell you first hand that I was annoyed at the thought of learning another new app. Enter: Clubhouse.
What is Clubhouse?
Clubhouse is a new drop-in audio chat social media app. The app functions sort of like a cross between an interactive podcast and a virtual conference hall, where you can sit in and listen to various speakers or even join them on stage yourself.
After being invited about a month ago, I hate to admit I actually do quite enjoy the app lol. I’ve found that in some ways it’s less work than being on Instagram and TikTok, because all of the content is live. You don’t have to schedule any sort of time or extra work, you can just jump in and listen to chats, or come and join in on the conversation for 30 min at a time.
I also found a couple of helpful articles that can give you a better idea of what this app is all about:

Elon Musk went on Clubhouse, TechCrunch
How does it work?
First, you need to be invited to the app.
Next, you set-up your app profile with your bio and a picture and connect Instagram and Twitter if you wish.
You can then explore the “Hallway” - the main feed for active and ongoing chatrooms. Clubhouse rooms shown in the hallway are public, anyone can join in at any time. Or you can start a private room with one or more of your connections and have a private chat.
If you are in a room you find interesting, you can also ping one of your friends to join.
The Clubhouse calendar shows the list of upcoming rooms - anyone can add a new room or event to this calendar.
You can join a room as listener or create one as a room owner and organize it with active speakers and moderators on the so-called “stage” of the room.
If you want to join in as a speaker in any given room, use the “Raise Hand” feature at the bottom right of the app once in the room. If the moderators invite you up, you can then either speak on the topic or ask a question.
You can click “Leave Quietly” to ✌🏽 out of the room whenever.

Joining Clubs
Clubs typically have rules where you may have to follow moderators, recommend new members, or join Facebook Groups before being approved
To schedule a room within a Club, you may have to get approval first
Clubhouse Etiquette: Once the party hat comes off..
Clubhouse Etiquette
If you invite someone, once they join do a walk-through of the app with them 🤗
When you are brought on stage
Mute yourself immediately as you will first be brought on the stage off-mute
They will typically take your question in order of where you are in the room
You can un-mute once it’s your turn
When you are in a room on stage, tapping on the mute button in a slow progression signals that you want to speak next
When you are in a room on stage, tapping on the mute button in a rapid progression signals that you are “clapping” or applauding the current speaker 👏🏽
Terms to know
Moderator
Speakers or owners of the room
Allowed to invite people on stage or kick people out, can mute anyone
“Resetting the room”
With the drop-in nature of the app, people come in and out often so a moderator will “reset the room,” which is re-introducing the topic of what the room is about and what they’re currently discussing
“One Mic”
If too many people are talking, someone will say “one mic” to re-focus back to one speaker
These are all some personal learnings and tips I have found as I’ve been navigating the app, but feel free to share anything below on what you know. This is still a very new app so I’m sure they’ll be more terms and tricks as it continues on. :)
Hope you found this helpful and learn to use the app to make meaningful connections!
